The last incarnation of Soviet Main Battle Tanks, the T-90 was introduced sometime in the late 1980s. It's design is a radical departure from traditional tank schemas. The hull has been lowered to the ground slightly, and the turret completly flattened as a result of a completly automated gun. The tank is one and a half meters longer than the T-80, enabling room for the driver gunner and commander to all sit in the hull front, side by side. Ammunition is stored in the turret as well as the tank's center, the engine in the rear. Beneath the full front's lower glacis is a dozer blade, with attachment points for the KMT-6 mine clearing plow. Two small IR spotlights are moutned on either side of the main gun, part of the Shtora ATGM defense system. The engine is the Model 84 V-84 diesel engine, producing 840 hp. The tank features second generation reactive armour, and ERA bricks are on the turret roof to provide protection against top attack weapons. There are four smoke mortars on either side of the turret. The tank also incorporates (unknown to the world until the confrontation with the Chinese in 1995) a TShU-1-7 IR Jamming system, designed to disrupt the guidance of ATGMs. The two IR spotlights continuously emit coded pulsed infared jamming when an ATGM has been detected. Also, the tank incorporates a laser warning system, so that the tank crew knows when it has a laser designator on it (being 'lased'). The T-90 has kept to 125 mm gun of the T-80 and T-72, and is able to fire the AT-11 Sniper laser guided ATGM. The gunner has a laser range finder and thermal sighting. The fire control system is computerized. The DShK is manned by the commander via remote control, as is the PK MG for the gunner.
