Also: Hello. My name is Christopher Webb. I've played many things for quite a few years, and I've started my first Merc:2000 campaign (I've had quite a few T2K 1st edition campaigns many years ago). I'm also looking for more material (adventures, primarily) for a campaign that is primarily centered around the central United States. I've got a web page up and running chronicling the M2K campaign (which started in December) at http://users.ctos.com/~cwebb/m2k/m2kmain.htm I've been trying to get a few odd elements to come together in the campaign, primarily by trying to incorporate New America (from several of the 1st edition adventures) and possibly elements of Dark Conspiracy into my post-millenial merc universe. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome, and I'm willing to discuss future campaign plans (since I know none of the players know about this list)... - -Christopher Webb http://users.ctos.com/~cwebb/ - --- Writing is flying in dreams. One day, four young Marine warriors turn up outside the pearly gates. St Peter explained that before they could pass they must answer one simple question. Up walked the first guy. St Peter asked, "What's 2+2?" The 1st warrior answered: "3" "NO" said St Peter. "5" "NO" said St Peter. "4" "Yes; in you go." Up comes the second warrior. St Peter asked him, "What's 2+2?" He answered, "The square route of 16." Very impressed St Peter allows him past. Up comes the third warrior. St Peter asked him, "What's 2+2?" "It's greater than 2." "Yes" "But less than 6" "Yes" "It's greater than 3" "Yes" "But less than 5" "Yes" "It's 4" "Well done; in you go" Up comes the fourth warrior. St Peter asked him, "What's 2+2?" "5, Ooo-Rahhhhh!!!" and with no pause he barges past St Peter and in through the pearly gates. Observing all this, an angel asked St Peter, "What was all that about?" St Peter answered, "It's perfectly obvious: there must be a war on earth, and those four men were all Marine officers who have been killed." "How can you tell they were officers?" inquires the angel. "The first guy was an engineer, dumb as seaweed and crude as mud, but he kept hammering away until he got through." "The second guy was an aviator, who gave me more information than I really required." "The third guy was an artilleryman, who was uncomfortable with any firm answer, but was bracketing to zero in on the correct answer." "But what about the fourth guy?" inquired the angel. "He got it wrong, and then tore through the gates anyway." "Ahh," said St Peter, "That was the infantry - dumber than dirt, but you've gotta just love 'em." *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 18:38:49 EST From: MOrab46019@aol.com Subject: Re: OT: Semper Fi Stereotypes I hope you like this *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 19:57:59 -0800 From: Peter Vieth Subject: Re: Cool Stuff Walter Rebsch wrote: > Speaking of cool stuff, has anyone played TACOPS 3.0? I hit the button to start combat and come back in a few > minutes when it's done. Yeah, I tried the demo too. I ran their Basic Training scenario about 5 times just trying out different tactics and trying to learn the interface. Then I ran their 'Task Force Gallagher' scenario. Combat does seem to take a while, but if it went any faster I wouldn't have been able to follow it during the larger and more complex engagements in the Gallagher scenario. My main problem with it is that it isn't easy to figure out LOS (line of sight) by just looking at the map, so I was spending 5 to 10 minutes every so often just analyzing the map with the LOS tool. It wasn't until half way through the Gallagher scenario that I figured out how to entrench a unit and a while after that until I finally pulled my head out of my butt and realized there was an ADJ/FFE selector on the artillery control. No wonder my artillery never did anything, I was always adjust firing! It has a couple strong points however and would be very well suited as a training tool to teach tactically challenged players a tiny bit about what works and what doesn't. You learn to respect those damn AT-5 Spandrel's real quick. It is a long way from a typical video game, and probably shouldn't be thought of that way. It's more of a tactical command simulator. It's about a 5 MB download, but should help some players (or referee's) with their tactics some. If more of you try it, let us know if it helps your game any. Or if you end up thinking it's worthless, let us know that too. The interface isn't the easiest, but it works and is reasonably clear once you get used to it. I hope I didn't come across as irritated or anything. If I did, I apologize. I was just trying to slow down and cool off any irritated responses to it. Again, I'd like to say the thought of contributing is appreciated. There seem to be many lurkers out there who never post anything. I don't know why. Maybe they are afraid people will jump on their opinions. As long as you don't make personal attacks against people, try to portray fiction as fact, or claim to be absolutely right about an issue when just guessing, everyone is pretty civil. Of course, my obvious intent here is to get more people to post to the list, there-by enhancing its value to everyone. China is probably the nation with the most, and there are at least 200 divisions in the PLA. Back when there was a USSR, they had a pretty huge number of divisions as well. I think it's down to 70 or so now. The US Army has only a handful of active divisions, but the cadre exists to build back up to 20-30 divisions (in theory). There was once a good strategy game by GDW called "The Third World War" which covered Europe and the MidEast. It had hundreds of unit counters for those countries alone. - -Rob Peter Vieth wrote: > Can anyone venture a guess at how many divisions (you know, the unit of > organization thats bigger than a brigade hehe) there are in the world? But if I recall correctly, before the Soviet collapse the total military personnel were ABOUT as follows: Soviet 5,000,000 China 3,000,000 USA 2,000,000 I don't know if this was a figure only for active duty or not. And this includes all branches of service. But I am certain that the Soviets had military personnel numbers equal to the USA and China combined. Maybe this will help some? A friend of mine bought a pre-WWI atlas for only a couple dollars at a used book store a while back. Nice condition too. It can't be that hard to find a 1930's atlas, unless you live in a small town and don't have a bunch of used book stores around. You can always check online yellow pages and call used book stores out of town. They would probably be happy to check their stock for you and mail it.
