Not sure if this will be of any use to anybody but I'm aware of some failings of the 23-4, they may also apply to the 30-6. At the least the indicate the engineering of Soviet Equipment. To the best of my knowledge this does not relate to 'Monkey' export models but the full Soviet version. The driver sits between the fuel tank and the batteries. The batteries are not covered. The ZSU is alledgely easy to roll over, if this happens the driver will be covered in battery acid. Fatalities in training are suppossed to be high. The commander/gunner (can't remember which) sits atop the unit that generates the radar waves, this waves being ducted to the tracking radar atop the turret. The ducting is shielded, the generator apparently not. Incidences of bowel or colon cancer are high. This point is not of much 'use' to the game but is some neat background where you can imagine some very angry/ill ZSU crews. The firing mechanism can overheat which can jam the guns into firing. After engaging a target the crew may lower the weapons, on training exercises this has lead to damage of surrounding units. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 07:28:35 EST From: Grimace997@aol.com Subject: Question on British military A question for you British-based T2kers.... If so, this leads me to my second question, which was the root of the initial discussion I was having with my friend. What is it like having women serving in combat units? Or should I ask -- Are women allowed to serve in combat units? Is there perhaps anyone on the list from Israel? Perhaps they could shed some light on this matter, as I believe Israel has been doing this for some time now. Hiya! Guess what, I too am new to this mailinglist - because this is the first day I recieve mail, I think it seems pretty lively. A flaw which makes me fear for the future of T2K, is that everyone seems to sell their books. Well when you are at it: I am interested in Small arms guide and Naval/aviation handbook. Now a short introduction: My name is Nis Leerskov Mathiesen and I come from Denmark (NW of Poland if anyone doesn't know :)), I have been playing T2K for a couple of years - both as GM and player. Recently I have begun a "traditional" game set in the T2K universe - a thing that I have never tried before (we always played in the world of today). I am working on a scenario set on the South Pole due to be released in 6 months or so. "Fire in the hole!" There used to be for a period around WW2 but it was phased out before my father was eligible (born 1943). I think it was dropped in the early 50s. It was only ever for men. The term used was National Service (if you want to search on it or something). Other European nations do still have National Service, can't recall which but it is not a small number. Women do serve in the British Armed Forces. In the Navy they serve alongside men on ships but I'm not aware of any on submarines. They serve in the RAF and can be trained as combat pilots. I'm not sure if there are any serving now, at least one was (Tornado pilot?) but she became pregnant and I believe she then left the service. I'm not aware that they can serve in combat infantry units (this would include the RAF regiment), if you really want to know about the situation I can try and find out. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 12:24:34 -0500 From: "Loonz" Subject: Re: M4 Carbine A few of us have spoken and I wasn't sure if it should be increased, If the consensus (here) is it should be 40-45 then I can surely update. What is it like having women serving :in combat units? Or should I ask -- Are women allowed to serve in combat :units? At the moment female soldiers do not serve in "combat" units as Infantry, Cavalry or Artillery soldiers but in their roles as Medics or whatever do "serve" in combat zones. There will always be a big debate as to whether or not women should serve in the Armed forces (despite GI Jane) and (IMHO) it is really more to do with society being able to accept photographs of the "pretty girl next door" after losing a firefight. Also, the general public is likely frown on "Mothers" being killed in action - although, as many of will soon point out, this still happens. From a personal point of view I see no reason why female soldiers shouldn't be allowed to serve as infantry or whatever and they should be given a full range of posting options (they get the same pay and promotion prospects) but I also think this is a minority viewpoint. Also a lot of women I have worked with would never want to be "allowed" into infantry trades for many reasons (low pay, slow promotion, etc) and do not want to be allowed into combat - seriously though, I don't know any soldiers, male or female, who want to go into a firefight! Several countries use women in combat forces, some of them in all or virtually all roles (though I don't think any country actually drafts women, except maybe Israel)--the only one I can remember off the top of my head that's integrated them fully is the Netherlands, but if you do an Internet search on topics like "women in combat" you could probably find a list. Gents, Firstly, thank you for your warm welcome. Having read the few posts that have been made so far, I have already picked up a hell of a lot of information already. A general question. I am running a Twilight 2000 campaign, having not done so for quite a while (5+ years). I am going to have to re-learn the mechanics of skills and combat fairly quickly, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for: * Campaign settings * Ways of having people start as a group (rather than 'you are all old friends....') * Plots / Adventure ideas (I know this could lead to Pandoras box, but some general ideas would be nice) I ran the last campaign in the traditional European theatre. I had planned to run this one in Germany, but was trying to think of some other, more original and creative ideas. Keep the players interested, all that sort of stuff. They are all expecting the old "1999, world is about to explode, US and USSR already have, we're in Europe with no contact, very little supplies and ammo etc. etc......". A change would be nice. So if anyone has any ideas (or can point me somewhere that does) it would be greatly appreciated. Also, with the breakdown of government, every extremist group or cult will certainly try to flex their muscles during this time. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 01:05:32 +0000 From: Roger Stenning Subject: Re: Question on British military (longish reply) At 07:28 12/01/99 EST, you wrote: >A question for you British-based T2kers.... Prior to the 1950s IIRC, there was compulsory "National Service", males only. Following the abolition of National Service (IMHO, a poor move - crime rose rapidly following its' abolition. No discipline these days ...), Britain moved to a 'professional' military only, no conscription. >If so, this leads me to my second question, which was the root of the initial >discussion I was having with my friend. What is it like having women serving >in combat units? Or should I ask -- Are women allowed to serve in combat >units? I'm ex-Royal Military Police (Territorial Army, or 'Part time Reserves', as a lot of other nations call the concept). Women serve in the regular and reserve units, as integrated members of many units, and would, if Britain went to war, serve in all areas, not just rear admin areas, but near and even at, the Front Lines (It's an aspect of RMP operations, or 'Provost Operations' in wartime, that the RMP mark up military routes, reccenoitre and maintain those routes, called Main Supply Routes and Axial Routes. RMP also perform Nuclear and Chemical Warfare monitoring patrols in wartime, called 'NBC recce', a task which falls to all members of units serving in NBC affected areas. In some reservist Infantry units, there ARE women serving. Whether they would be sent to the front lines with their male colleagues is oipen to considerable conjecture, but AFAIK, if they're in a unit's ORBAT for deployment to the front, off they would go. Hope that helps. For what it's worth, the women in my unit (253 Provost Company, RMP(v)) pulled their weight at all times. Perhaps this is to do with the motto of the RMP (Exemplo Ducemus "By Example We Lead"), but IMHO, they wanted to be seen to be pulling their weight. Let me put it another way. The MINIMUM trained soldier rank in RMP is that of Lance Corporal (one chevron, or 'tape', as the Army calls it). This is so that a Military Policeman (or woman) may legally give orders to another soldier, even one of higher rank. It's a peculiarity of section 74(4) of the Army Act 1955, which is the legislation that gives a British MP his or her powers of arrest. To attain this rank, you have to pass your basic training, and serve in the unit for a minimum of four months (the time it takes to train you). After this, you can expect promotion to Corporal (two tapes) within two to three years, after a course called the CQT (Corporal Qualification Test). To be nominated by your Officer Commanding to undertake this test, you have to have been actively doing your job within the unit. Shirk the work, and you don't get to take the test. No women in my unit, and very few of the men, failed to get on the CQT at the first request. Hope that clears up that. >Is there perhaps anyone on the list from Israel? It will be about a group hired to protect a Sicilian village from inland robbers and barbary pirates. Thus, I am continuing my Med events theme. The Twilight book states that the African coast fell into disarray without any land combat occuring there. The states had oil, but, without the ability to import parts or states to trade with, the national governments broke up into coastal city-states. I have been running with those states heading the return of the Barbary Coast pirates hat raided in the Med through the 1850s. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe twilight2000' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 23:39:39 -0500 (EST) From: MIDNIGHTGUARD@webtv.net (Rob Lebowsky) Subject: DragonCon...
