I did something real similar to this way back when. In the adventure, the party had just evacuated from Europe via Morrocco. Due to a very bad storm and a lack of a competent navigator, the party ended up maing landfall in Brazil, near the mouth of the Amazon. The locals agreed to fix up their sailing ship and give them a navigator if the party would go up river to see who had stopped all the Amazon river traffic. It turned out that the traffic had been stopped by a (badly) damaged Russian missile cruiser, which had turned pirate a few years earlier and had an international crew of cut-throats. The captain, Sergei Kormorov, had decided to use the last of the fuel to hide out and build an empire in true Kurtz style. A very eerie and violent mini-campaign; I think it lasted more than 10 sessions. In the end, the party (plus a few Amazonian natives with blowguns and frog-poison arrows) infiltrated the compound and detonated the ship's magazine, killing the captain. Very satisfying, as the pirates had managed to kill two of the original campaign characters in a gruesome manner earlier (this was in 1991, in a semi-constant campaign that had run since 1987). I think I wrote some of this on my adventures page, but during the last boat encounter the PCs managed to sink a fishing trawler and a patrol boat in just a few minutes. I don't know if I was misinterpreting the rules-- the PCs hosed down a fiberglass boat and it received several critical hull hits (also killed the crew and the radio). Then a T-90 put two nice sized holes in the hull of their boat and took off the conning tower a minute later too. Then the PC's tried to chase the submarine from Boomer in an inflatable raft and a lifeboat while being pursued by a sailboat. Steven Charlton wrote: > > Hah! True enough. I suppose they could set up a small fee (maybe $10 or so) and give all who pay it a user name and password. Then allow them to access all the books. Or they could charge $x amount for each book, individually. They would have to be low prices (due to all the costs saved in printing, distribution, ect.), and due to the fact that it is not new material. In ways other than money, this could benefit Tantalus a good deal in PR, should they choose to exploit it. "The first company to make completely available on the Internet, the role-playing game Twilight: 2000." I'd think role-player's would come to take a look out of curiousity, if nothing more. In this, however, I would think that charging would be frowned upon by most of the inet community, as most of us feel (the consumers), that the Internet ought to be like a public library, free information to everyone. I'm not going to attempt to read between the lines. Mood does not transfer email. When you try to "feel the mood", you are most likely going to get it wrong, so back to my original question. Consider that we are allowing you to have web pages, within certain guidelines, and considering we are providing this mailing list I don't think we are mis-treating anyone. You may feel mistreated because we have not rushed head long into re-printing the game and since we are not a publishing company and since no one has stepped forward with a valid plan to publish these games (other than Dark Conspiracy), its not gotten done. As far as web sites go, we are not going to give away the farm, but I think we are being quite lenient and open about what we are allowing. Am I missing the point? Steve Jackson Games, for example, readily grants licenses for non-profit uses of its properties, based on the pretty intelligent assumption that if people are interested in their products and have many good ideas available for them, they're more likely to buy them. Mind you, Tantalus doesn't actually seem to be interested in selling products; it seems you'd much rather restrict people with dubious legal arguments (the TSR vs. WOTC case over The Planar Order comes to mind here) than sell a product. I do understand and agree with your concern both for protecting the text of your rules from unauthorized copying, and with your concern for protecting your trademark, and the necessity of doing both of those in order to protect your claim to your intellectual property. I haven't seen the web page in question, so I don't know if the individual went beyond his own rights, however... ...it does strike me that you're trying to push for the broadest possible definition of your own rights, without any regard for the possiblity of coming to a compromise that avoids testing those rights, or indeed for your own PR image, and I don't know that that's a bright thing to do. It's a nasty subject, and although I agree that Tantalus appears to be dragging its' collective heels in some areas, the fact the Tantalus continues to allow us to run web sites for the game(s) we enjoy is, at least, a fair break for us.
