I know but the #1 step is "brewing" wether it be beer or distilled alcohol, conversion ,I would think anyways, shant be that difficult. Once you have the "beer" you boil off the alcohol, since alcohol has a lower boiling point than water (thats what the cap and the tubing running out of the top of a still is about). > Regarding the big commercial distilleries - someone mentioned the economies > of scale one gets by using HUUUUUGE stills. Human labor would be in relative abundance. Non farming and foraging types would be a convenient source of labor. Especially if the payoff looks to be good. Considering the state of transportation and the like, I would bet that oil and refined fuels would be just about impossible to have, esp. in Europe, therefore distilled alcohol becomes a viable alternative. For starters, the EE-3, EE-9, and EE-11 are all in the Merc: 2000 book. I've got photocopies of them, so I know they are there. The TAM, or TH-301 is also found in that book (Merc:2000) or in the NATO vehicle handbook (V2) on page 38. The TAM is simply the Argentinian model of the TH-301. Same layout. The AMX-30, AMX-13, and AMX-10RC are also in the NATO handbook. I'm not sure whether these are Giat, but I believe so. (Isn't that the standard manufacturer for those models?) The Fuchs, Luchs and Saxon are also in the NATO guide. The Panhard AML, VCR and M3 are in the Merc handbook, as is the RAM V-1. So is the OTO-Melara 6614. The Steyr (how do you pronounce that word??) 4k 7FA, and the SK 105 are also in the NATO handbook. (once again, V2). If I'm totally off base, and the models you are referring to are something different, please forgive me. If not, you may want to invest in those books if you don't have them already. At least for the sake of having the vehicle guides. By the way, I'm anxious to see you stats on the Rooikat and other South African designs. That equipment has always intrigued me. As does the S-tank. Too cool looking, but I wonder about the combat effectiveness of it. Hmmm???? Hope this helped. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Apr 1998 02:28:36 -0300 From: wardlow Subject: Re: Web page update: Vehicles The stridsvagen or S - tank is found in Jane's AFV guide. The Rooikat, B1 Centauro, Daimler Benz variety of wheeled tank destroyers are profiled in Miltech Magazine, if you wish I'll send a few stats on the weekend. As for their effectiveness, most of them mount a low pressure 105mm, although there is one that mounts a regular high pressure120mm smoothbore. As an ex-armour man, I would prefer this type of vehicle to anything except a M1E2 or IP, Whichever you wish to call it. These small vehicles provide the most bang for the buck. Most armour encounters are shoot and scoot. If you slug it out your dead. And these little babies can operate in most environments in comfort (airconditioning and completely NBC equiped, and GPS ). They are more economical on fuel, the only thing they're short on is armour. The reports say they're quite roomy. Also if your looking at MBT's the Tanque Argentino Medino or TAM is only a mediocre tank look more to the Merkava 3, and Newer versions of the Leopard. Give me the names of vehicles you need info on and I'll check my library. Miltech is an advanced buyer guide so you get pretty good evaluations of all the newer stuff on the market. Even uses a few Intelligence reports. Plus I always have my Jane's. That equipment has always intrigued me. As does the S- tank. > Too cool looking, but I wonder about the combat effectiveness of it. > Hmmm???? I remember reading Vortex by Larry Bond two years ago, and ever since I've though of maybe running an African campaign. That's why now I wanted to start off with the Chinese vehicles (in my campaign China is a lot more important, and the Chinese invade Australia, which made for a interesting [but unfortunately short] campaign) followed by the South African vehicles. As for the S-tank, it's pretty old now. I read a book from the 80s predicting that tanks with turrets would become too expensive and that most armies would start buying vehicles like the S-tank to keep the price down. Well it sounds like crap to me, since the tank runs into a lot of problems. If you have seen some of the new crew in hull designs and pictures of how they are supposed to operate (the tank hides behind a hill with only unmanned turret exposed) you will notice one problem with the tank, since it has to expose itself to fire. It also can't turn in close confines (I imagine it would have trouble in a city). Moving fire is tricky, since you have to turn the whole tank to aim the gun (the barrel moves around a little, but not much). The accuracy of the S-tank is relatively poor, and if you develop a problem with the suspension you also have a problem shooting. What dooms it in my mind is that it is just too complicated. The S-tank is also expensive. Stick with the turret. - -- Peter Vieth Fitek@ix.netcom.com IGZ Handle: Fitek ICQ UIN: 3660410 Web page: http://www.netcom.com/~Fitek/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Apr 1998 00:07:10 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jeffrey P.
