American 180

This super-hi-capacity 1800 rpm .22 caliber submachine gun was
introduced in the early 1980's. It was originally dubbed the
American 180 but since then has been made under a number of names
by a number of companies. Currently only a semi-automatic version
is available from E&L Manufacturing for US$695. The original
market was local Police Departments, Federal and State
Penitentiaries, ironically, the intimidating 1800 rpm pounding
action of the AM180, which could easily demolish a cinder block
wall, also had the power to defeat soft body armour that certain
prison guards wore. For this reason, some State Penitentiaries
retired the AM180 shortly after they were acquired. The AM180 was
originally sold with an optional Laser-Lok siteing system, an early
laser sight weighing 2.7 kg. Controllability was phenomenal according
to testers, an entire magazine was fired at a hostage target in one
continuous 6 second burst from 25 yards. The results were the hostage
lived and all but three rounds struck the bad guy's head. The group
measured six inches at the widest point, with the majority of rounds
in a 5 cm diameter area. The drum magazines are firmly locked on top
of the weapon which may be fired sideways or upside down, shell
ejection is out the bottom facilitating ambidextrous use. 165, 220,
and 275 round Lexan drums are available. They are 3.2, 3.5 and 4 cm
tall and hold 3, 4 and 5 layers of ammunition respectively.

The solid butt stock of the AM180 is removable with the push of a
button or can replaced with a folding wire stock. A 22cm barrel and
vertical foregrip are also available, if used with no stock this leads
to a decrease in length of about 40 cm and a increase of Brst to 7.
