(Sverdlov-class light cruiser)

The Sverdlov class were based on late WWII German, Italian and British designs
for capitol ships. Fourteen were built beginning in 1949,but construction of
more was discontinued in 1956. All vessels of this class were updated in the
1970's and again in the 1980's. The Soviets evidently intended to keep this
class in service for some time;the ships all possessed excellent command
facilities and their powerful gun batteries gave the USSR the world's finest
shore bombardment capabilities, at least until the US Navy brought the Iowa
class battleships back on line in the late 1980's.
